Men 1 take two convincing wins

On 27 January OVC Men 1 travelled to Binfield to play at Newbold College. The usual suspects made up the squad on the day: Rune, Jeremy, Anders, Raul, Jon, Gareth, Gerard, Gabri, Martijn.

First match against Basingstoke

Basingstoke are down towards the bottom end of the league table, and we put them under pressure from the start. We kept up a good level for most of the match, despite the level of our opposition. We wrapped up the match in 30 minutes, 25-9, 25-11. Some consistent powerful serving by Gareth did not gain him the MVP, instead they voted for Gerard!

Second match against Newbold

After our referee break, we all struggled to get warm again in the hall that measured 10.9 degrees Celsius. We were leading for most of the first set despite making more mistakes than usual. Newbold lifted their level and at 23-24, we failed to side-out to lose the first set of the season.

A couple of changes for the line-up in the second set and a few encouraging words got us off to a good start again, and this time we didn’t make many mistakes and kept our level up. We made every single side-out and together with a much improved block and defence we showed them the first set was a blip, set two ours: 25-9.

In the deciding set we slowed down a little but still 8-6 ahead at the change of ends. From there we put some more pressure on our service and closed out the set 15-9. Unfortunately Anders had to limp off to the side after twisting his ankle – but he still managed to get the MVP vote!

Ladies 2: You win one, you lose one...

Ladies 2 stayed in Oxford for their next fixtures, taking on Spikeos 2 and Oxford Uni at Oxford High School. Unfortunately, our setter, Amra, wasn't well. With Izzy also unable to play, our coach (Seb) had to get creative and put Helen as opposite to support Tati as setter. Andrea and Fliss were playing through the middle, and Hanna, Giulia and Anna W were our outsides. Hanna took over the captainship for the first match to allow Helen to focus on the new position.

Oxford v Spikeos 2
It took the rejigged team a little while to settle into the new arrangement and we dropped behind from the start but, by the end of the first set, things were flowing better. Despite this, Spikeos took the set 25-17.

We lost our rhythm a bit at the start of the second set and before too long were behind 21-13. However, some steady serving and great team work brought us back to 21-21. Bad refereeing throughout the match was frustrating, and especially so on match point for us when a touch by the opposing blocker went unnoticed. We remained valiant but lost the set 27-25.

Oxford v Oxford University
The team was much more relaxed in the the second match against Oxford Uni and we really found our flow and played some nice volleyball. The passing was much improved, enabling Tati to make use of all the hitters. We stayed ahead and took the set 25-17.

The second set also went well, and Oxford Uni were never really in the game. Some great play from the whole team, and especially some great setting from Tati, won us the set 25-17.

Well done to Fliss for gaining MVP for both matches!

OVC Men 1 beat the snow and both opponents in BVA league

On Sunday 20 January, Men 1 travelled to Aldershot to play Farnborough and Maidenhead. After much talk about risking the snow or not, the WAGS let their men out to play. A good decision, as the roads were fine and, after a scenic route, we eventually made it to Aldershot. The hall was cold: 12.6 degrees Celsius according to official Danish measurements. Squad for the day, led by coach Martijn and captain Gerard: Jeremy, Rune, Raul, Jon, Martijn, Gerard, Gabri, Gareth.

First match against Maidenhead
A solid start of the match got us into the lead straight away; from 5-1, 9-2, 19-8, we won the first set 25-16. In the second set more of the same although we made a few more mistakes. We battled through and the win was never in doubt, 25-18. MVP as voted by them: Gerard.

Second match against Farnborough
High expectations from a powerful Farnborough side were outclassed by us from the start. Some strong serving got them in trouble and gave us a 12-2 lead. We gave them no chance to get back into the game, as we occasionally played some sexy volleyball, extending our lead to 20-6 and won the first set 25-11. In the second we lost our focus a little after we got ahead again 10-5. We never got behind in the set, though, and some good serving and defending later on got us from 16-14 to 22-15 and eventually we closed out the set 25-19. Another 2-0 victory. MVP as voted by them: Martijn.
