Oxford takes the double and beat Basingstoke and Newbury in style

18-February-2007. Oxford travel to Basingstoke. Oxford need 2 wins to stay in the race for a top 2 spot which means qualification for prestigious Champions League next season.

The return of some ‘oldies’, mixed with the hardcore saw Oxford come out very strong, playing quality volleyball in the Berkshire Local League.

1st game against Newbury
Despite a long warm-up by Newbury and a short one for Oxford, Oxford had a flying start and after 10 minutes Oxford had won the first set comfortably, 25-9. Good serving, and good discipline all around was too much for the Newbury team, who had recently contracted a left handed American to help them out. He helped Newbury in the second set, together with sloppy play from Oxford, to force a 3rd and deciding set. Oxford put everything right again in that 3rd set and gave Newbury no chance at all, 15-5. Oxford win 2-1!

2nd game against Basingstoke
3rd game of the fixture saw 2 teams with already 1 win each, as Basingstoke beat Newbury 2-1 in the previous game. Some old muscles had to be warmed up again in the Oxford team, and they started slowly in the first set. This gave Basingstoke the chance to take a lead and continue their momentum from the previous game. Half way through that first set, Oxford woke up again and in a disciplined manner, plus some 3-men blocks, made a great come-back to beat Basingstoke 25-21. Basingstoke started to run out of steam and Oxford played as if the average age of the team was only 23, instead of the more likely number 38.. Oxford took the second set 25-15.
