The Berkshire Volleyball Association (BVA) League

The Berkshire Volleyball Association (BVA) runs the BVA league for clubs within Berkshire and the surrounding counties, including Oxfordshire. The BVA is run by elected volunteers from the member clubs; the Chairman is currently our very own Maïté Braud. Member clubs also send representatives to regular BVA committee meetings.

There are currently five divisions in the BVA league, with matches taking place from October to April:
  • Mens' Division 1
  • Mens' Division 2
  • Ladies' Division 1
  • Ladies Division 2
  • Mixed Division
For the 2014/15 season, OVC has 7 teams entered in the Mens' 1 (Vollox, Bulls), Mens' 2 (Bullox), Ladies' 1 (Eagles), Ladies' 2 (Falcons) and Mixed (Globetrotters and Sharks) divisions.

Each fixture, no matter the division, is made up of three matches (ie 'triangular' fixtures). Each team plays  two matches per fixture, and the two visiting teams always play each other first. The non-playing team is required to officiate and has to provide a qualified referee, a second referee, scorers and line judges.

For example, if Oxford Eagles were playing Basingstoke Lioness and Spikeopaths Ladies 1 at home in Oxford, the triangle would look something like this:
  • Match 1 – Basingstoke vs Spikeos (Oxford reffing)
  • Match 2 – Oxford vs Basingstoke (Spikeos reffing)
  • Match 3 – Oxford vs Spikeos (Basingstoke reffing)
A full set of rules, together with the BVA match protocol (timings etc), can be found on the BVA website. This is also the place to visit for the most up-to-date fixture information and league standings.
Each squad should assume a fixture on average every fortnight with Mixed fixtures alternating weekly with the Mens' and Ladies' fixtures. Fixtures are always on a Sunday and last around 4 hours in total.

At the end of the season, the BVA holds a tournament called the BVA Plate, in which teams who have played in the league that year take each other on in a timed, 1-day format. The BVA Plate typically takes place in May.
